The suit of G. L. Grant against Speaker Joe Hardage to test the validity of Amendment No. 13, which virtually limits the session of the legislature to 60 days, probably will come before Chancellor Martineau within the next day or two for argument. It will go to the Supreme Court at once, regardless of the way in which it will be decided, and an effort will be made to have the case advanced on the calendar in the Supreme Court.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 16, 1963

Amendment 35 to the Arkansas Constitution, which sets up the present Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, would be repealed under a proposal submitted to the House today. The new measure came in HJR8, which would propose a constitutional amendment to be voted upon in the 1964 general election. In addition to repealing Amendment 35, effective July 1, 1965, the proposal would have the General Assembly provide by law for the regulation and conservation of wildlife in the state.

School funding for every single public school student in Arkansas will be reduced by $10.34 because of a state obligation to finance part of the court-ordered school desegregation in Pulaski County, members of the state Legislative Council learned Friday. “Your schools and my schools are going to pay for a super school system in Pulaski County,” Rep. Lloyd George of Danville said during the meeting. “I want y’all to know when you read about the Pulaski County court order that the state of Arkansas is footing the bill. And it’s going on forever. This is just the beginning.” 10 YEARS AGO Jan. 16, 2003 Sunday bus service in Little Rock is about to run out of gas. Unable to find enough money to balance its budget, Central Arkansas Transit Authority directorsagreed at a Wednesday budget workshop to go through with plans to eliminate Little Rock’s Sunday bus routes when they vote next week on a 2003 budget. If the revised $9.13 million budget passes at Tuesday’s full board meeting, the last buses for about 1,000 Sunday riders will run Jan. 26, the last Sunday of the month.
