Lanes closures expected on I-540 near Van Buren, Fort Smith

Lane closures are upcoming on Interstate 540 for planned improvements.

The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department said the work will take place between Arkansas 22 in Fort Smith and Interstate 40 in Van Buren. Warning signs will be installed on Jan. 17, with additional signs being placed Jan. 22 on multiple roads connecting to I-540.

Work will begin Jan. 28 with the main lanes of I-540. Initially, the left northbound and southbound lanes from Arkansas 22 to I-40 will be affected. The maintenance is necessary to allow workers to reconstruct the inside shoulder of the northbound lane as well as any temporary crossovers and ramps in the median along the route.

The work is being done in accordance with the Arkansas Highway Commission project that was awarded to Kiewit Infrastructure South Company, a $78.8 million project, to replace the driving surfaces of two bridges and bridge structures along with the reconstruction of nine bridges along the route.

The project is expected to be finished by the middle of 2014.
