PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Don’t Decide What Others Need

I’ve been reading a lot of letters in the paper regarding gun ownership, most written in light of the horrid massacre in Newtown, Conn.

One of the many arguments presented by the anti-gun advocates is “nobody needs a semiautomatic rifle with a maxiclip.”

While, in principle, I agree, please allow me this slight interjection. I own four road vehicles and two televisions. I only need two vehicles and certainly don’t need any televisions.

I want my vehicles and television, and should not be berated for the purchases of and ownership of these legally bought items.

The purchase of firearms is legal and guaranteed by the Second Amendment.

The type and style of firearms purchased is governed by the buyer’s wants, uses (legal) and by, yes, regulations currently in place (a concern of law abiding citizens).

If everyone owned only what they needed and nothing more, life would be far less rewarding and needlessly dull.

Legal firearm owners should not be looked upon with ire any more than the owner of a 60-inch, 3-D, high-def TV.

On the other hand, who really needs 500 cable channels to watch?
