— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 15, 1913

With a view to lessening as far as possible the danger to the lives of the citizens of Little Rock from electric wires, General Manager C.J. Griffith of the Little Rock Railway and Electric Company has obtained many booklets and posters setting forth the most approved methods of resuscitation from electric shock, and at once will distribute and post them in all public places in the city. The rules are simple, contain no technical terms and anyone who can read can understand and apply them.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 15, 1963

Little Rock has witnessed a 50 percent increase in the number of automobiles on city streets since 1959 and the problem of traffic safety has become urgent, the Downtown Little Rock Kiwanis Club was told today. City Manager Ancil M. Douthit, in a speech prepared for delivery at the club, said over 90,000 automobiles were now on Little Rock streets. The number of automobiles has grown much faster than the population, Douthit said.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 15, 1988

A member of the University of Arkansas board of trustees Thursday blasted Attorney General Steve Clark for his opinion this week affecting Razorback athletics. “I think there are a thousand lawyers in Little Rock better than Steve Clark,” James Blair of Springdale said during an interview before a trustee meeting in Little Rock. Blair is also an attorney for Tyson Foods Inc. Clark said in an opinion released Wednesday that records of the Razorback Scholarship Fund Inc., at least those kept until this week, are subject to the state Freedom of Information Act.

10 YEARS AGO Jan. 15, 2003

Gov. Mike Huckabee offered a sweeping and radical legislative agenda Tuesday, the most notable and sure to be the most debated item being a wholesale consolidation of school districts. Huckabee said he refused to be another governor who talked big about improving education but did little. “It’s not good enough for us to try and improve education,” Huckabee said. “We must triumph in this effort.” He wants Arkansas’ 310 school districts to meld into a system of 107 to 116 districts. The plan targets school districts with fewer than 1,500 students.
