Journalism Project Seeks Applicants

The 12th annual Lemke Journalism Project, a series of workshops for high school students from Northwest Arkansas who are interested in writing about multicultural issues, will begin Feb. 2.

The workshops will end March 9.

The project is sponsored by the Walter J. Lemke Department of Journalism at the University of Arkansas and is paid for by Tyson Foods Inc. and Northwest Arkansas Newspapers.

The program is free to students. Lunch and snacks are provided, as well as transportation for Rogers and Springdale students.

The deadline for applications is Friday. The application form is available at ljp.uark.edu. Students can learn more about the program through their school counselor’s office.

The workshops allow high school students to meet with leaders from the community and work with journalism professors and professionals to write stories for a newspaper that will be published at the end of the workshop and presented to the students during the annual Journalism Days at the department. The newspaper will be distributed in La Prensa. Students also will be able to work on television, photography and multimedia projects.

Local members of the Society of Professional Journalists will participate, providing professional coaches for the students.

Tyson’s funding also provides scholarships for students who want to major in journalism at the university.
