A political hot potatowas finally picked up late Tuesday afternoon when Rep. Ron Fuller asked for an attorney general’s opinion on whether records of the Razorback Scholarship Fund are open to the public. Fuller, of Little Rock, asked Attorney General Steve Clark whether the fund’s records are covered by the state Freedom of Information Act. The fund provides 36 percent of the money for the men’s athletic program at the University of Arkansas-Fayetteville, records indicate. Fuller made his request, he said, because “I just think it’s the public’s right to know how these funds are handled.” 10 YEARS AGO Jan. 13, 2003

Legislators from across Arkansas will take up temporary residence in Little Rock for the next several months starting today, thebeginning of the 84th General Assembly. The session is expected to be one of the more difficult ones in recent memory given the mandate from the state Supreme Court to improve schools. In the Lake View case, the court found that Arkansas schools were inadequate and inequitable. Legislators are wrestling with solutions, including consolidation and raising taxes.
