Bulldogs Forced To Accept Tough Loss

— Springdale High boys basketball coach Brad Stamps might need a day to recover from Friday’s 59-57 loss at Siloam Springs.

That Figures

0 — Free throws attempted by Springdale’s boys in the fourth quarter

8 — Free throws Siloam Springs attempted during that stretch

7 — Free throws the Panthers made in eight fourth-quarter attempts

The Bulldogs led by as much as eight points in the fourth quarter, but they watched as the Panthers converted several fast-break opportunities and hit three free throws in the final 30 seconds to remain undefeated in the 7A/6A-West Conference.

Springdale (10-6, 2-1) must turn around following their first loss in January and host crosstown rival Springdale Har-Ber on Tuesday.

“I’m not disappointed that we lost the game. I’m not disappointed with their effort,” Stamps said Friday inside the Panther Activity Center. “I’m disappointed for them because I thought we let a game slip away that we shouldn’t have.”

The Bulldogs had hoped to stay unbeaten in 7A/6A-West play, but they were outscored 13-3 in the final six minutes of the game. Tereke Eckwood’s last-second shot to force overtime came up short.

“They made some plays at the end that they had to, and we didn’t,” Stamps said.

Play of the Night: Forward Alex Scharlau had an impressive stretch of 58 seconds that helped give Springdale a 50-46 lead on Siloam Springs heading into the fourth quarter. The senior drained a pair of 3-pointers in 27 seconds, then took a charge with 34 seconds remaining in the quarter to cap his solid play on both ends of the floor.

“He’s a warrior, and he’s going to play his butt off to the end,” Stamps said.

Players of the Games: Springdale post player Karen Perez showed what she’s capable of when she uses her size to battle in the paint. The junior scored all seven of her points in the second half of Friday’s 51-40 loss at Siloam Springs, giving the Lady Bulldogs an inside presence after they struggled to rebound early on.

Scharlau picked a good time to find his shooting touch. He hit three 3-pointers in the final 9 minutes, 32 seconds to finish with a team-high 12 points against Siloam Springs. His final 3-pointer gave Springdale a 57-56 lead with 59 seconds remaining.

Notable: Springdale held Siloam Springs star Payton Henson, who has signed with Tulane, to only 16 points. But Dylan Gray made up for Henson’s slow night by scoring a game-high 19 points. ... Siloam Springs’ girls team went on a 22-2 run in the first half, including a stretch in which the Lady Panthers scored 18 consecutive points.

The Lingo: “Uncharacteristically we turned the ball over a lot tonight, which is not a lot like us. You know, we’ve kept our turnovers to a minimum.”

Up Next: Springdale teams should have no trouble getting motivated for either of their two opponents this week. They host Har-Ber on Tuesday in the first meeting this season between the two rival schools. They then turn around Friday with a home game against Fayetteville in the Battle of the Bulldogs.
