— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 12, 1913

Owing to the fact that the Petit-Galloway Plumbing Company, 114 East Seventh street, has declared for an open shop on plumbers, all their union employees and helpers quit work Saturday noon, and according to statements made, will not return to work Monday morning. An employee of the Petit-Galloway company said last night the union men walked out because some young men employed by the firm as helpers were not receiving as much for their services as the union thought they should.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 12, 1963

The city of Rogers has fallen heir to an old post office building and will use it as a public library. Ownership of the building was transferred yesterday in a brief ceremony in the office of state Education Commissioner A.W. Ford. Sam G. Wynn of Dallas, acting for the Surplus Property Division of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare, gave title to the property to Mayor Seward Puckett of Rogers. The transaction did not cost Rogers anything. The city had only to guarantee that the $43,000 building would be used as a public library.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 12, 1988

The number of colleges and schools at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock will be reduced from 10 to seven under an academic reorganization plan released Monday. However, no degree programs will be eliminated. The reorganization, the first at the university in 12 years, was initiated in January 1987 because of increases in enrollment and the number of graduate programs, university officials said.

Beginning today, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette Web site will offer access to classified job listings from about 100 newspapers around the country through a new service, Jobs Arkansas. Jobs Arkansas relies on a national network, Career Site, to provide the service, which is free to people looking for jobs, said Ron Beach, the Democrat-Gazette’s classified advertising director.
