Oaklawn Park report

— Owner hedging his ‘Bet’

  • Unbeaten Gentlemen’s Bet is scheduled to make his comeback in today’s seventh race at Oaklawn Park, a $54,000 entryallowance sprint for older horses.

Maybe.

Owner Harry Rosenblum of Little Rock said he’s 90 percent sure the 4-year-old colt will be scratched if the track is off because of expected rain.

“I hope the weatherman is incorrect,” Rosenblum said.

Rosenblum has been waiting more than a year for Gentlemen’s Bet to make his second start.

The son of Half Ours hasn’t raced since a 7 1/4-length debut victory Jan.

5, 2012, at Gulfstream Park near Miami.

He underwent surgery about a month later after a small fracture was discovered in his right front ankle, Rosenblum said.

Rosenblum said Gentlemen’s Bet resumed training in late April, but suffered a minor setback, unrelated to the original injury, last summer and was freshened for an Oaklawn campaign.

“As it turned out, the horse is bigger and stronger,” Rosenblum said.

“Hopefully in the long run, he can give us a lot of excitement.”

Wayne Catalano saddled Gentlemen’s Bet in his career debut, but the colt is now with trainer Ron Moquett of Hot Springs.

Stall list

Bemata is scheduled to be trainer Al Stall’s first starter of the meeting in today’s sixth race, a maidenallowance event for 3-yearolds at 1 1/16 miles.

Stall, a fixture at Fair Grounds in New Orleans, has a division at Oaklawn for the first time since 2006, when numerous trainers and jockeys were displaced because of Hurricane Katrina.

Stall plans to keep around 12-16 horses in Hot Springs, said Glenn Brookfield, who oversees Stall’s Oaklawn division.

“We’re planning on running a lot of horses here,” Brookfield said.

Brookfield said one of Stall’s major owners, Adele Dilschneider, “loves” Oaklawn and is a friend of track owner Charles Cella.

“She really wants her horses here,” Brookfield said. “And with the purses, we can’t disagree.”

Dilschneider campaigns horses with historic Claiborne Farm, a partnership punctuated by 2010 Breeders’ Cup Classic winner Blame.

Brookfield said Stall’s Oaklawn string features lightly raced or unstarted young horses bred and owned by Dilschneider and Claiborne, including Bemata (by Horse Greeley).

“These kind of horses [Claiborne] breeds, they take a little time to develop,” Brookfield said. “These are not sprinters. There’s somethat have run some seconds or thirds, but there’s a lot of talent there. We’ve just have to keep them stretched out.”

Bemata ran second, third and fourth in three starts last year.

In his last start, Bemata finished second to Hawaakom in a Dec. 15 maiden-allowance route at Fair Grounds in New Orleans.

Hawaakom will likely run in next Saturday’s $200,000 Grade III Lecomte at Fair Grounds, trainer Dan Peitz said.
