LITTLE ROCK — Anthony Lewis scored 21 points to propel Helena-West Helena Central to a 64-60 victory over host Sylvan Hills in a 5A-Central Conference game.
The game was tight throughout with Sylvan Hills leading 19-16 at the end of the first quarter and 29-28 at the halftime. There were five ties and seven lead changes. The Cougars (4-4, 1-2) took the lead late in the third quarter and led 47-44 to start the final quarter.
“I am proud of our guys fighting hard tonight after a couple of tough losses,” Helena-West Helena Central Coach Willie Jackson said. “We played hard, and we played smart.”
Sylvan Hills’ Delsin Parker hit a three-pointer to cut the lead to 51-50. On the next possession, Lewis answered with a three to make the score 54-50. The Bears got no closer.
Frederick Bedford added 19 points for the Cougars, including all 10 second chance-points scored by Helena-West Helena. The Cougars also made 13 of 21 free throws, compared to just 3 of 5 for the Bears.
