The Northwest Arkansas Mercy Family YMCA will host its annual Tux on the Run fundraiser at 10 a.m. Saturday at the YMCA in Rogers. The theme for this year’s 5K is “Winter Wonderland.”

Participants will receive an official Tux on the Run T-shirt.

Winners in the men’s, women’s and age group categories will receive trophies.

Registration is $20 before Saturday or $30 the day of the race. Race-day registration will take place from 9-9:45 a.m.

  • ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Hobbs plans star party Saturday

The Sugar Creek Astronomical Society will host a star party at 4:30 p.m. Saturday at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area near Rogers.

A beginning astronomy class kicks off at 4:30 p.m., followed by a night sky observation at 5:30 p.m. The astronomy group and Friends of Hobbs will provide high-powered telescopes for viewing.

Guests will get to see the Orion Nebula, Trapezium, Jupiter, Andromeda and Pinwheel galaxies, Taurus constellation and Pleiades, also known as Seven Sisters.

Participants should take along a flashlight covered with a red cloth or balloon; binoculars or a telescope; a folding chair;

and a star chart.

  • ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTE Library screens Soul Food Junkies

The Arkansas Educational Television Network, the Fayetteville Public Library and KUAF 91.3-FM will host a free, advance screening of Soul Food Junkies as part of the Community Cinema project at 2 p.m. Sunday at the library.

The film follows filmmaker Byron Hurt’s historical and culinary journey as he tries to learn about the soul food tradition and its relevance to black cultural identity. Hurt discovers dishes like ribs, grits and fried chicken are culturally based and deep-rooted.

The film features interviews with soul food cooks, historians, scholars, doctors, family members and everyday people.

Soul Food Junkies will air on AETN at 9 p.m. Monday.
