Suspect in killing pleads innocent

— A Fort Smith man pleaded innocent Wednesday in Sebastian County Circuit Court to a charge tied to the death of a woman shot when someone fired into a van full of people last month.

Jonathan Jackson, 23, was arraigned Wednesday on charges of first-degree murder and committing a terrorist act, according to court records. A public defender was appointed to represent Jackson. He remained in the Sebastian County jail in lieuof a $250,000 bond.

Jackson was arrested Dec. 28 in the shooting death of 21-year-old Aleya Criswell who was in the van that police say Jackson fired at as it passed him on the street, thinking it held people who were threatening his friend. Criswell was shot once in the lower back and died shortly after at Sparks Regional Medical Center.

The committing a terrorist act charge stemmed from shots fired at the other six people in the van.
