A state senator is blocking the appointment of a woman to the state Board of Education because she’s too old, a spokesman for Gov. Mike Huckabee said Thursday. The senator, Terry Smith, a Democrat from Hot Springs, denied that. “I don’t know what idiot in the governor’s office would say that,” he said in an interview. At issue is whether Smith has told the Huckabee administration that he would block Senate confirmation of Huckabee’s planned appointment of 80-year-old Mary Rose Caballero-Horner of Hot Springs Village, who lives in Smith’s district. Smith acknowledged he has expressed concern about her age and health in light of Huckabee’s plan to put her on the board.
