Eric Shaffer of Fayetteville received a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and human performance from McMurry University during ceremonies Dec. 15.

James Rodgers of Farmington graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology in New York with a bachelor’s degree in applied arts and sciences.

Susan Heil of the Fayetteville School Board has been recognized by the Arkansas School Boards Association as a Pinnacle Board Member after participation in at least 200 hours of continuing education or other board development activities.

Four area students placed in the statewide “My Reason to Write” essay contest. More than 1,700 Arkansas students in grades 2-9 wrote letters to thank someone in their lives whoinfluenced them to stay away from tobacco. The online contest is part of the Stamp Out Smoking program. Winners in the grade 4-6 category included first place to Thomas Crawford at Washington Middle School in Bentonville and third place to Ariauna Gutierrez at Randall G. Lynch Middle School in Farmington. Two students at Woodland Junior High in Fayetteville placed in grades 7-9, with first place to Ashley Wilson and second toBetty Pendleton.

Entries were judged by a panel of judges in the English Department at Stephen F.

Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas.

In addition to prizes given winners, each teacher of a first-place winner received a $300 gift card for classroom supplies.
