LITTLE ROCK — 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 9, 1913 MEMPHIS - Acting on a report by Dr. J. C. Bell, secretary of the Board of Health, the quarantine against Marion, Ark., was lifted Wednesday by Dr. M. Goltman, superintendent. Dr. Bell investigated conditions at Marion and said that he had found one fatality there from meningitis. No new cases had developed. In an effort to assist the Arkansas authorities in stamping out the malady, Dr. Bell today was sent to Marianna, where it is reported the disease is still prevalent, but under control.

If the 1963 legislature provides more money for recreational facilities, the Publicity and Parks Commission will be ready to proceed with whatever program the General Assembly approves. Gov. Faubus said recently that development of tourist facilities would be one way to create new jobs in Arkansas. He indicated he would ask the legislature for money for this purpose.
25 YEARS AGO Jan. 9, 1988 The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department has spent about $900,000 removing snow from state roads this week, Dan Flowers, assistant chief engineer, estimated Friday. The expense includes about 20,000 overtime hours worked by 2,200 highway maintenance employees who began 12-hour, continuous shifts early Wednesday as the storm moved into the state.

The Little Rock Police Department, brought to you by Taco Bell? Don’t expect it anytime soon. As several other cities are entertaining the idea of advertising on police cars in exchange for financial benefits, Little Rock leaders are being warned to stay away from the idea. “The Little Rock Police Department exists as a neutral, impartial law enforcementagency,” City Manager Bruce Moore wrote in a memo to city directors Tuesday. The two-page memo warned city leaders of possible consequences of such sponsorships, including conflicts of interest and the inability of residents to identify police cars strewn with ads.
