Events honoring King begin Saturday

The Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Planning Committee and the University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will host a series of events honoring the life and legacy of the civil rights leader starting Saturday. The theme for this year’s events is “Out of a mountain of despair, a stone of hope.”

A parade will begin events at 2 p.m. Saturday in downtown Fort Smith. The parade, which will feature local bands, will begin at Garrison Avenue and Seventh Street.

The Ministerial Alliance prayer service will be at 6:30 p.m.

Jan. 16 at First Missionary Baptist Church, 3110 Kelly Highway, in Fort Smith. A banquet is planned at 7 p.m. Jan. 19 in the Reynolds Room at the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

The event will include guest speakers and live entertainment, and scholarships and citizenship awards will be handed out. Tickets are $20-$30.

The university will host a breakfast, educational events and a march starting at 7:30 a.m. Jan. 21 in the campus center. UA Fort Smith faculty and staff will present educational sessions about King, followed by a march to the university bell tower.

Guests will also have the opportunity to see the second inauguration of U.S. President Barack Obama on TV as part of the event.

A panel discussion “Unsung Heroes - 50 Years of ‘I Have a Dream’” is set for 10 a.m. Jan. 22 in the Reynolds Room. Panelists include UA Fort Smith Chancellor Paul B. Beran; Sherry Toliver, executive director of the Fort Smith Community Foundation and president of the Lincoln Alumni Association;

Jim Dunn, CEO and president of the U.S. Marshal’s Museum;

and Euba Winton, a community activist.
