— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 7, 1913

JONESBORO - Cries of “Fire! Fire!” by a parrot yesterday morning saved the lives of the McCarthy family. They were sleeping in their living apartments adjoining the McCarthy studio, when they were awakened about 12:30 o’clock by the cries of the bird. They barely had time to escape with their lives, all their belongings being consumed. The origin of the fire is not known.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 7, 1963

About 71,000 Pulaski Countians ranging in age from a few months to the 80s, protected themselves against one of three types of polio with a dose of oral vaccine yesterday. The Pulaski County Medical Society said they were encouraged by the turnout, and hopeful that even more persons will attend one of 51 clinics next Sunday. The society frankly termed it “most unusual” that the clinics went smoothly, even though this was the first one.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 7, 1988

Snow, snow and more snow brought traffic accidents and more traffic accidents - about 130 - throughout the day Wednesday in Pulaski County, according to area law enforcement agencies. The city of Little Rock had “in excess of 100” traffic accidents between 7 a.m.-2 p.m. Lt. R.L. “Bert” Jenkins, spokesman for the Little Rock Police Department said. By late afternoon, the number of accidents dropped because traffic slackened, impassable roads were barricaded and drivers began adjusting to weather conditions.

10 YEARS AGO Jan. 7, 2003

Three hundred fifty seven children in kindergarten through fifth grade had enrolled in the Arkansas Virtual School by Monday, the head of the school said. The new online elementary school, financed through a $2.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education’s Voluntary Public School Choice Program, has 450 slots, and the enrollees come from 89 of the state’s public school districts. Through the grant, each participant will get a computer, a printer and most of the supplies needed for the curriculum.
