PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: GOP Pushes Fairness For Everyone

Monday, January 7, 2013

Regarding a recent letter by Richard Snively (Public Viewpoint, Dec. 30), I find it somewhat amusing that he starts by calling another writer a liar, then spews a tirade of half lies and misconceptions.

Not to mention the wornout excuse that George Bush did it. Is the present resident of the White House at any point going to put on the Big Boy pants and claim ownership of his administration? I say enough of the whining, crybaby stuff!

And then the “filthy rich” that only pays 14 percent income tax, presumably only Republicans. That’s a misconception that is worse than a lie. Anyone - I mean rich, poor, middle class, Republicans, Catholics, Baptists and even Democrats - can and does take advantage of the capital gains tax. It covers most investment income and, yes, if you “flip” a house it qualifies. Until Jan. 1 it was 15 percent, and if you want to donate lots of money, it will lower any tax rate. Mitt Romney gave millions to his church and charity, so it lowered his “effective tax rate” below the 15 percent capital gains rate. You, too, could have a lower tax rate if you were generous.

Then the phrase “the Republicans gave tax breaks to the wealthy.” Well, yes, they did. It was called the Bush tax cuts that were given to all taxpayers, not just the “wealthy Republicans.”

Crazy, corrupt GOP, they think “fair” means to include everyone.

When the GOP engages in class warfare I will change parties. I would probably not be able to join the Democrats. My faith will not let me covet other people’s property or hate the “filthy rich.”
