— 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 1913

Hundreds of sorrowing friends and relatives of the late Senator Jeff Davis yesterday viewed the body at the Davis residence, 1425 Broadway. Stacked high about the bier were floral offerings from friends and admirers in all parts of the country. Members of the family received dozens of messages of sympathy from far and near.

50 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 1963

HOT SPRINGS - Explosive experts and Hot Springs authorities continued their probe today of the mysterious explosion that ripped through the plush Vapors night club yesterday. The blast, which injured 11 persons, shattered the interior of the club’s lobby, men’s rest room and a portion of the gambling casino. The explosion was apparently caused by “some kind of time bomb,” Fire Chief Vern Smith said.

25 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 1988

Darrell Glascock filed a lawsuit Monday against the state Democratic Party seeking an injunction that would allow him to run as a Democrat against Rep. Bill Alexander in the 1stCongressional District. Glascock, a former political consultant of Rep. Tommy Robinson, D-Ark., and former Republican Gov. Frank White, had filed Dec. 22 to run against Alexander, also a Democrat. But the executive committee of the state Democratic Party voted Dec. 30 to disqualify Glascock as a Democratic candidate because of his involvement in White’s unsuccessful campaign for governor in 1986. Party rules state no one “who has supported a candidate in opposition to a Democratic nominee within the past two years” will be permitted to run as a Democratic candidate.

10 YEARS AGO Jan. 5, 2003

FAYETTEVILLE - The University of Arkansas must heed a federal student privacy law as it cooperates with the FBI’s attempts to gather information about international students in a new era of homeland security, officials said. In recent weeks, the Federal Bureau of Investigation has asked universities around the country to turn over specific information about foreign students. The inquiries come as the agency combats the threats of terrorism and counterintelligence.
