Falcons fight off Cougars

— North Pulaski outscored Helena-West Helena Central 11-2 early in the third quarter to break open a tight game as the Falcons defeated the Cougars 79-68.

Trailing 39-37 with 7:40 to go in the third quarter, North Pulaski (7-5,1-0) put together its run to take a 48-41 lead and never trailed Helena-West Helena (3-3, 0-1 5A-Central) again.

The Cougars cut the lead to 51-48 late in the quarter, but two consecutive three-pointers by Rashawn Langston pushed the lead back to nine points. Helena-West Helena never pulled closer than seven points the rest of the way.

Helena-West Helena’s Alonzo Murphy hit a three pointer at the buzzer to tie the game 37-37 going into halftime.

Langston led North Pulaski with 29 points. Eric Mouton added 18 points, and Joseph Aiken had 14. Jeremy Hampton led Helena-West Helena with 19 points, followed by Delane Bedford with 15 points.

5A-CENTRAL GIRLS HELENA-WEST HELENA 56, NORTH PULASKI 37

Helena-West Helena (3-3, 1-0 5A-Central) led North Pulaski from start to finish in the conference opener. The Lady Cougars built a 24-10 lead by the end of the first quarter, and it grew to 30-14 before North Pulaski went on a 6-2 run to cut the lead to 32-20 going into halftime. The Lady Falcons cut the lead to 34-28 early in the second half, but that was as close as they would get. Helena-West Helena extended the lead to 44-35 by the end of the third quarter, and the final quarter was all Helena-West Helena Central. Kymberlee Collier led Helena-West Helena with 21 points.
