LITTLE ROCK — 100 YEARS AGO Jan. 2, 1913 Superintendent R. C. Hall of the Little Rock public schools has announced that all 6-year-old children and those who will reach the age of 6 years anytime during the month of February will be entitled to enter the public schools at the beginning of the second term on January 27. Every child entering the school is required to have been vaccinated before a permit will be granted.

YELLVILLE - Marion County started the New Year with a who’s who dilemma in its county politics. The county may wind up with two sheriffs for a while. A court order issued Monday recognizes George Hickey of Flippin as sheriff while a commission granted by the governor’soffice shows incumbent Jack Pace and Yellville as sheriff. However, Hickey was sworn in as sheriff yesterday by Justice of the Peace J.E. Butler, according to Arthur N. Wood of Flippin, Hickey’s attorney. Pace could not be reached to determine if he had also been sworn in.

Little Rock police officers gave unbuckled motorists vocal warnings Friday as the city’s new seat belt ordinance went into effect. The ordinance, passed by the Little Rock Board of Directors on Dec. 1, calls for a maximum fine of $25 for anyone not wearing a seat belt while driving or riding in a vehicle. Officers are not permitted to stop a car to check for seat belt use, but can issue a ticket after the car has been stopped for some other potential violation.

The first full day in which all checked baggage was screened for explosives netted a couple of guns and a few delays at Little Rock National Airport, Adams Field. The new security measures went into effect at midnight Tuesday, but most passengers at Little Rock National and most of the other 428 commercial airports in the United States did not encounter the new system until Wednesday, the first day of the new year. Most passengers were sanguine about the new procedures that greeted them in the airport’s ticketing area.
