Shaken survivors

set to finish trip

PENDLETON, Ore.

At least 14 survivors remained hospitalized in three states after the weekend crash that killed nine and injured 38 others.

State police escorted some of the survivors one by one to collect their property, which was strewn across a hillside as the tour bus careened 200 feet from a partly icy roadway Sunday.

The bus was returning to Vancouver, British Columbia, on the final leg of a nine-day tour of the western United States. The trip was organized by a British Columbia travel agency to carry tourists traveling in small groups. Most of the passengers were Korean.

The Red Cross said some of the survivors were too terrified to get on another bus, so a nearby Ford dealer offered to drive them in smaller passenger vehicles.

Some were expected to begin the trip today.

State police and National Transportation Safety Board investigators were expected to finish an inspection of the bus Tuesday.

The Oregon State Police identified one of the nine fatalities as a 57-year-old Washington man. Authorities said Dale William Osborn of Spanaway was killed in the Sunday crash and his wife, Sue Osborn, remained hospitalized.

Authorities have not yet released the names of the other eight people who died.

Subway stumble is fatal in NYC

NEW YORK - New York City police said a young woman stumbling around on a Manhattan subway platform not far from Times Square fell onto the tracks and was killed by a train.

The accident happened at around 5 a.m. on New Year’s Day at the No. 2 line station on 34th Street and Seventh Avenue. That is one stop from where revelers gather in Times Square to see the ball drop.

Police said the victim was in her 20s. Her name wasn’t immediately released.

Subway deaths are common in the city. Last year, according a report in the Daily News, there was about one fatality a week.

But track deaths have been getting extra scrutiny in recent weeks after two men were shoved to their deaths in December.

Plane sideswiped

at Florida airport

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. - Authorities said no one was injured when two airplanes got into a sort of fender-bender Monday night at a Florida airport.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue said a taxiing Spirit Airlines Airbus A-320 clipped a US Airways Airbus A-320.

The US Airways jet was parked Monday night in a remote area away from the gate at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

Spirit spokesman Misty Pinson said a flight from Atlanta was taxiing to its gate when its left wing clipped the parked plane. Pinson said all 162 passengers on board got off at the gate as normal, and the plane returned to service.

Authorities said the US Airways aircraft was left with a gash in its tail section.
