Van Slooten paints way to Eagle rank

Nicholas Van Slooten, 14, of Bentonville is a new Eagle Scout. He is a memberof Troop 222, which meets at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Bentonville, and is the son of Paul and Jennifer Van Slooten.

For his Eagle Scout project, Van Slootenpainted the playground areas at three Bentonville schools - Ardis Ann Middle School, Elm Tree Elementary School and Lincoln Junior High School. Van Slooten’s scout troop and friends joined in as he painted curbs, parking lot lines, hopscotch and basketball lines, iron railings and tether ball poles at each playground.

Botanical Garden honors volunteers

The Botanical Garden of the Ozarks in Fayetteville honored volunteers and staff members at an awards banquet Feb. 19 at the garden.

Kitty Sanders took home the Perennial Award for Volunteer of the Year. The Coneflower Award for Staff Recognition went to Susan Jenkins, while the Rosebud Award for First Year Volunteer of the Year went to Doris Cassidy.

Mary Frances Branton earned the Daffodil Award for Reception Volunteer of the Year, and Julie Sanders won the Orchid Award for Special Events Volunteer of the Year.

Joyce Richards received the Daylily Award for Horticulture Volunteer of the Year. Sandy Davies was honored with the Milkweed Award for Education Volunteer of the Year.

About 60 people attended the event, according to Judy Smith, the garden’s communications and education coordinator.

ASPIRE honors Marugg-Wolfe

Marjorie Marugg-Wolfe recently retired as president of the Board of Directors of ASPIRE, Assisting Single Parents In Realizing Education.

ASPIRE is a national nonprofit organization modeled after Arkansas’ successful scholarship program for single parents.

Marugg-Wolfe co-founded the Single Parent Scholarship Fund of Benton County in 1984 and has shared her skills and experience with the ASPIRE team since 2010. She is a dedicated community leader who has devoted over 40 years to helping people acquire the skills and education required for their personal and professional success.

Wilson, Pendleton win essay contest

Ashley Wilson and Betty Pendleton are the winners of the Woodland Junior High School Stamp Out Smoking essay contest.

Wilson won first prize, and Pendleton received second-place honors.

Woodland Junior High film teacher Julie Agler also won a $300 Walmart gift card for classroom use as part of the contest.

Leadership Fort Smith seeks nominees

Nominations are now being accepted for the Leadership Fort Smith class of 2014. The program is designed for residents of the greater Fort Smith region fromall walks of life.

Twenty-five participants will be chosen for the regional, issues-oriented education program which includes 10 full-day sessions held August through April; opening and closing retreats; and a commencement banquet.

Nominees should consistently lead the way on projects, according to Leadership Fort Smith Director Barbara Harvel. Nominees should also be communityminded and can be established, current or up-andcoming leaders in the Fort Smith area.

Self-nominations are also welcome and encouraged, according to a news release. Applications are due by May 24.
