— Deltic’s net income up to $2.4 million

Deltic Timber Corp.

posted a net income of $2.4 million for its fourth quarter, reversing a $208,000 loss in the same quarter a year ago, the company announced Wednesday.

Earnings per share for the quarter ending Dec. 31 were 19 cents, compared with a loss of 2 cents per share in the same period in 2011.

Deltic attributed the increase in profit mainly to a $4.6 million improvement to the company’s mills segment. Sales for the El Dorado-based company also increased 27 percent to $36 million for the fourth quarter.

For the year, Deltic turned a profit of about $9.2 million, compared with about $2.7 million in 2011.

The company released its earnings report after markets closed.

Wal-Mart’s Simon

to speak at forum

Bill Simon, president and chief executive of Wal-Mart Stores Inc.’s U.S.

stores division, will speak Tuesday at the 34th annual Raymond James Institutional Investors Conference.

Simon’s division includes about 3,900 stores and employs 1.3 million, sees more than 140 million customers each week.

The division had revenues of $264 billion in the company’s fiscal year 2012, according to Wal-Mart’s website.

Prior to his current position, Simon was chief operating officer for Wal-Mart U.S. from 2007 to 2010.

15 stocks advance

as index rises 4.26

The Arkansas Index, a price-weighted index that tracks the largest public companies based in the state, climbed 4.26 to 263.44 Wednesday.

“U.S. stocks surged higher, erasing the week’s losses after better-thanexpected readings from pending home sales and durable goods orders,” said John Blackwell, senior vice president and managing director of equity trading at Stephens Inc. in Little Rock. “The Arkansas Index moved up as 15 stocks advanced and one declined.”

The state’s four publicly traded truckers had the best day: J.B. Hunt Transport Services and P.A.M. Transportation Services, up 5.2 percent each; USA Truck, up 4.4 percent and Arkansas Best, up 3.9 percent.

The index was developed by Bloomberg News and the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette with a base value of 100 as of Dec. 30, 1997.
