Man Given Four More Years

— A man already serving 147 years in prison for eight counts of attempted capital murder, including shooting a Fayetteville police officer, pleaded guilty to a felony driving while intoxicated charge Tuesday.

Sergio Hidalgo Andrade Martinez, 52, pleaded guilty in Washington County Circuit Court to his fourth DWI charge. He was sentenced to four years, which will run concurrently with his other sentences. Three drug delivery charges were dropped.

Andrade Martinez shot Fayetteville police officer Blake Williamson in the ankle and shot at seven other officers during a standoff at an apartment complex last March. Andrade Martinez was convicted in December.

Andrade Martinez fired at least eight rounds, based on the number of empty shell casings found at the scene. One shot hit an apartment across the street. Police evacuated families from the complex during the shootout.

He was eventually taken down with a stun gun by an emergency response team.

University of Arkansas police had initially tried to stop Andrade Martinez, who admitted being drunk, for a seat belt violation but he fled to his Bedford Loop apartment where the situation escalated into a shootout.

At the time, Andrade Martinez was free on bond awaiting trial on the driving while intoxicated charge and the three counts of delivery of methamphetamine.

In addition to the attempted capital murder charges, Andrade was also found guilty of two counts of aggravated assault, two counts of being a felon in possession of a gun, possession of cocaine and possession of drugs and a gun. Andrade Martinez faced 24 charges, plus sentencing enhancements for the use of a firearm during the commission of those crimes.

Should Andrade Martinez ever be released, federal authorities will deport him to Mexico.
