Man gets 9 years in arms violation

A 33-year-old Springdale man was sentenced to nine years in prison Monday after pleading guilty in November to a federal firearms violation. Michael Carnes, who listed his employment as dealing in adult novelties, was found to be a felon in possession of a firearm.

He was previously convicted in Benton County Circuit Court in 2006 of possession of methamphetamine with intent to deliver and carrying a prohibited weapon, said assistant U.S. Attorney David Harris, who prosecuted the federal case.

Fayetteville police arrested Carnes after a traffic stop on July 9. He consented toa search, which produced a handgun, a knife and $4,000. He admitted to being a convicted felon and was arrested, according to a release by the U.S. Attorney’s office issued Tuesday.

A subsequent search of Carnes’ home resulted in the seizure of two more weapons, methamphetamine, a ledger used to record drug transactions and $7,900. The guns included a .22 caliber pistol, a 12-gauge shotgun and a .357 caliber revolver.

In addition to his federal prison sentence, Carnes was sentenced to three years of supervised release and ordered to pay a $12,500 fine.
