SUPERMARKET SLEUTH

Cherri, Bubb, Lem, Mel join Mike, Ike

— Just Born is the company that makes Peeps. You may remember I wrote about the marshmallow treats for Valentine’s Day. But the company also makes Hot Tamales, Goldenberg’s Peanut Chews and Mike and Ike.

From now through April, Mike and Ike is bringing back two oldies. Cherri and Bubb is a mixture of cherry- and bubblegum-flavored candies that was first released in 1989. Lem and Mel is a mix of lemon- and watermelon-flavored candies that was originally released in 1991.

They should be found at many major supermarkets and mass merchandise stores, where a 5-ounce box costs $1 to $1.39.

I’ve been a fan of Post’s Honey Bunches of Oats cereals for a while now. I especially love the version that’s just a box full of the crunchy bunches. Keeping in step with the current Greek yogurt craze, Post recently introduced Honey Bunches of Oats Greek Honey Crunch Cereal. The cereal is a combination of whole grain flakes and crunchy granola clusters made with real yogurt. It contains 230 calories per cup and sells for about $4 for a 15.5-ounce box.

Also new from Post is the Great Grains Protein Blend line. The Cinnamon Hazelnut version combines almonds and hazelnuts with multigrain flakes and clusters with real cinnamon. Honey, Oats & Seeds is made with almonds, pumpkin seeds, and multigrain flakes and clusters with sunflower seeds. It also costs about $4 for a 14.75-ounce box.

Along with the original Grape-Nuts and Grape Nut Flakes, Post is now marketing Grape-Nuts Fit. The cereal is a combination of light crunchy nuggets, granola, puffed barley, cranberries and a hint of natural vanilla. It contains 220 calories per twothirds cup serving, 5 grams of fiber and 6 grams of protein, and should also sell for about $4 a box.

Last year I wrote about the delicious International Delight Iced Coffee, which isn’t exactly low in calories. The company recently introduced a new Light line that has only 100 calories per 8-ounce serving. It comes in Vanilla and Mocha flavors right now, and in June they’ll be rolling out a Caramel Macchiato flavor. Look for it in your grocer’s dairy section, where a half gallon costs $3.50 to $4, depending on where you shop and whether there’s a store special.
