UAPB ekes out victory in home finale

— Arkansas-Pine Bluff let a nine-point second-half lead slip away, but rallied from a five-point deficit with a minute remaining to escape with a 73-72 victory at H.O. Clemmons Arena in its final home game of the season.

The game was tied 70-70 when UAPB’s Marcel Mosley knocked a ball loose, Davon Haynes corralled it, tossed it to Tevin Hammond, whose three-pointer from the left wing gave UAPB a 73-70 lead with 1 second left.

Students rushed the floor before UAPB Coach George Ivory and his staff ushered them off, but it still resulted in a technical foul. Jackson State’s Christian Williams made both free throws, but Kelsey Howard’s final-second heave missed and the Golden Lions finished 9-0 at home this season.

UAPB (15-14, 14-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference) finishes the regular season Thursday at Mississippi Valley State.

The Golden Lions trailed 70-65 after Williams made two free throws with 1:03 left.

But Haynes got a dunk, was fouled, and made the free throws, then Lazabian Jackson made two free throws before Hammond’s three-pointer.

UAPB led 48-39 with 14:22 left, but Jackson State (8-17, 7-9), behind Williams and Howard, outscored UAPB 17-8 to take a 54-53 lead with less than eight minutes remaining. The lead changed hands five different times the rest of the game.

Jackson made 7 of 16 three pointers and finished with 23 points while Terrell Kennedy had 16 points and eight rebounds. Hammond finished with 11 points, and Haynes had10 points and eight rebounds.

Howard had 23 points for Jackson State and Williams added 21.

SWAC WOMEN ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF 70, JACKSON STATE 64

PINE BLUFF - Lakendra Marsh scored eight points in the final three minutes to help Arkansas-Pine Bluff hold on for a victory in its home finale at H.O. Clemmons Arena.

Marsh, playing in her final game at home, made a breakaway layup to tie the game at 60-60 with 2:47 left and made 6 of 6 free throws in the final 1:32 for the Lady Lions.

Marsh finished with 22 points, aided by 11-of-14 free-throw shooting, while Christina Lasane added 10 in a game in which UAPB shot to 35.2 percent from the floor.

UAPB (10-17, 6-11 Southwestern Athletic Conference) trailed 64-62 with 1:52 left, but held Jackson State (10-15, 7-9) scoreless the rest of the game and made 8 of 8 free throws to clinch the victory.

Demara Howard led Jackson State with 14 points, while Beatrice Banks and Tiffany Kellum each added 13 points.

TOP 25 MEN NO. 6 KANSAS 108, IOWA STATE 96

AMES, Iowa - Elijah Johnson scored a career-high 39 points - 12 in overtime - and No. 6 Kansas rallied to beat Iowa State Coach Bill Self’s 500th career victory.

Travis Releford added 19 points for the Jayhawks (24-4, 12-3 Big 12), who snapped Iowa State’s 22-game home winning streak and kept pace with No. 13 Kansas State atop the Big 12.

Korie Lucious scored 23 points and Tyrus McGee had 22 for the Cyclones (19-9, 9-6), who dropped their third overtime game in Big 12 play - and their second consecutive at the hands of the Jayhawks.

NO. 22 MARQUETTE 74, NO. 12 SYRACUSE 71

MILWAUKEE - Davante Gardner scored a career-high 26 points for No. 22 Marquette (20-7, 11-4 Big East) a game after being benched by Coach Buzz Williams.

Williams saying he benched the junior center because “he played really bad” in Saturday’s loss to 60-56 loss to Villanova.

C.J. Fair had 20 points for Syracuse (22-6, 10-5), which has lost three of five and dropped into a tie for fourth with No. 21 Notre Dame.

NO. 13 KANSAS STATE 75, TEXAS TECH 55

MANHATTAN, Kan. - Thomas Gipson scored 20 points, Angel Rodriguez added 16 and Kansas State (23-5, 12-3 Big 12) reached 12 conference victories for the first time in 40 years.

Dusty Hannahs (Pulaski Academy) scored 14 points for the Red Raiders (9-17, 2-13) and Jaye Crockett added 13.
