For the first time perhaps in the history of Pulaski county the gambling houses of Little Rock and Argenta are tightly closed. If there is any gaming going on in either city it is surrounded by a secrecy that would baffle the skill of a Sherlock Holmes. The last raids of Sheriff Hutton and his deputies and the announcements by Mayor Taylor of Little Rock, Mayor Faucette of Argenta and Prosecuting Attorney Rogers that they would cooperate with the sheriff apparently have convinced the gamblers that the lid is on and will remain on as long as “Big Bill” Hutton is sheriff.

Ashley County Rep. Nap Murphy withdrew his gambling bill this afternoon. Murphy said that in its present form he could not vote for the bill and could not ask House members to vote for it. The bill as introduced by Murphy set up a special division in the state police to investigate violations of the state’s gambling laws. Murphy said he had done everything he could to secure passage of the bill in acceptable form but that “it is clear now that this cannot be done.”

Cannons aid most district schools already conduct the Pledge of Allegiance and/or sing the national anthem daily, or at least at assemblies and athletic events. Only about six elementary schools currently do not have patriotic observances.

Snow piled up across Arkansas on Monday night and Tuesday morning, socking in schoolchildren, glazing roads and shutting down much of the state. And Monday night’s snowstorm was just the beginning. Another wintry blast is expected to hit the state late tonight, bringing snow to northern Arkansas and a mix of freezing rain and snow to central and south Arkansas, according to forecasters.
