LITTLE ROCK — 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 25, 1913
Rueben G. Dye, state land commissioner, put in a rather strenuous day yesterday. Having his office declared vacant by Attorney General Moose, being appointed to it by Governor Robinson and then seeing the house pass a bill to abolish the office - all in one day - was his experience. Also Mr. Dye enjoys the distinction of being the only state official in the history of Arkansas whose office was declared vacant after he had been elected to it.

Integration of Rebsamen Park golf course became a fact over the weekend when four Negroes played the course Saturday and yesterday without incident. A federal court order two weeks ago struck down the segregated status of the city’s parks. Once before a Negro golfer played on Rebsamen, but after nine holes he was given his money back and asked to leave. Officials at the other public golf course, Memorial Park, reported no Negroes showed up there to play.

A cat lost since Sunday had a local tree trimmer out on a limb Wednesday afternoon. Onlookers stood on the ground and peered 50 feet up into a tree as Felix the cat gazed down at the small gathering. “She’s gonna jump! I know she’s gonna jump!” owner Cindy Hill said. Felix apparently had escaped from Ms. Hill’s house on 13 Baker Circle, North Little Rock. Ms. Hill and her three daughters had recently got a puppy. “The cat’s been a little jealous,” she explained.

About 800 employees in the agency responsible for supervising the state’s prison probationers and parolees will be shortening their work weeks from now until July to offset a half-million dollar budget shortfall. The Arkansas Department of Community Correction informed its employees Monday that they will be forced to take one unpaid day of leave during each two-week pay period for the remainder of fiscal 2003. That will amount to eight days of unpaid leave for each of the department’s employees and will save the department about $561,000.
