Events on Islamic culture start today

Moroccan-American filmmaker Hakim Belabbes will spend three days in Northwest Arkansas beginning today as part of Caravanserai: A Place Where Cultures Meet, a series of events hosted by the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville to show the diversity of Islamic cultures.

Belabbes will host a film workshop at 5 p.m. today in the J.B. Hunt Center on the UA campus in Fayetteville. The filmmaker will screen segments of his work and discuss aspects of narrative and documentary filmmaking with graduate students and the public.

Belabbes will present his films and hold question-andanswer sessions with local high school students on his visit.

He will be at Bentonville High School Tuesday and at Fayetteville High School on Wednesday.

The filmmaker will also present two of his films - A Nest in the Heat and Whispers - at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Fayetteville Public Library. After the screenings, he will discuss the filmmaking process and answer questions.

Today’s film workshop and the presentation at the Fayetteville library are free and open to the public.

  • ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTEUAFS sets series of autism events

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will host a series of events focused on autism and autism spectrum disorders in late February and early March leading up to a March 11 appearance by Temple Grandin, a leading authority on the disorders.

Grandin, an expert on the humane handling of livestock, was diagnosed with autism at an early age. She earned a doctorate in animal science and is now a professor at Colorado State University.

An Evening with Temple Grandin is set for 5:30 p.m.

March 11 in the Stubblefield Center at UAFS.

Events leading up to Grandin’s visit include a panel discussion, Autism Spectrum Disorders: Thinking Differently, at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Echols Conference Center and a screening of the HBO movie about Grandin on March 4 in the Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center.

All events are free, but space is limited. Tickets will be required for Grandin’s talk.
