PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Critic Way Out Of Bounds

Posted: February 25, 2013 at 1:36 a.m.

I read the letter by Dale Lange of Bella Vista (Public Viewpoint, Feb. 17). He belittled or talked down to Art Hobson about his beliefs. He thinks Art Hobson is a man with little understanding of anything he cannot see, feel, or touch. He says he has a small view of life and is living in a box.

Yes Mr. Keaton, you are free to believe whatever is in your heart, as I am free to answer an editorial that opposes my belief system as Mr. Hobson's did, comparing it to fairy tales and belief in Santa Claus.

As a Christian, it is my duty to stand up for the truth as I believe it and to debate those who would attack my faith. I am a veteran who served in Viet Nam where my faith grew stronger. I fought that you might have the right to be free but not that you or Mr. Hobson would have the right to unjustly attack Christianity.

As Christians we are comitted to defending our faith, even if it might offend a non believer. It is not our duty to shirk and hide when attacked.

There is no shame in what I have written about Mr. Hobson's editorial but, if it makes you feel better to say it, that is your right.

Mr. Lange--

Oh, waaaah! In what way did Dr. Hobson "oppose [your] belief system"? Not agreeing with it is not opposition, and neither is pointing out facts about religion.

Must you wrap yourself in the mantle of martyrdom in order to discuss your religion with somebody who simply doesn't believe it? It's such a cheap trick, and it's so Christian of you to resort to it.

Dale says: "I fought that you might have the right to be free but not that you or Mr. Hobson would have the right to unjustly attack Christianity.">>

Two points:

1) Dale doesn't mention where Art supposedly attacked Christianity unjustly. The word "Christian" only appears once in his article, in this context:

"Like many people, I became a religious generalist, and definitely not a Christian."

He mentions "Santa" in this context:

"I knew that "miracles"--virgin births, people rising from the dead--don't really happen, just as Santa doesn't really come down chimneys."

But that seems a fair point.

2) Aside from the fact that the 3-5 million Vietnamese we killed probably weren't infringing on our right to be free over here on the other side of the plant in America, being free certainly entails the right to attack a religious belief, or any belief, either justly or unjustly.

Dale: "As Christians we are comitted to defending our faith, even if it might offend a non believer.">>

I hope you stick around Dale, your side definitely needs some assistance from someone competent and I like your confident attitude.

Dale: "It is not our duty to shirk and hide when attacked.">>

I agree, even thought Art's comments were actually pretty mild in what he said specifically about Christianity. Stick around.

I took the dear wife to St. James Missionary Baptist church this weekend. It was quite nice and we had a very good time. They are very nice people and I believe they are doing some good things for the community, at least with regard to helping people out emotionally and when they are feeling down and hopeless. When they do that alter call, it's all I can do to resist going down and making them feel good. But I suppose a belief in God would be required for that.

I have two friends who went to St James for the music program and the chance to sing in their choir. Good , classic black gospel music.

Another thing, where do these folks get off on
"attack?" Why are commentaries considered
"attacks?" Saying something critical is not an attack.
