— 100 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 1913 Because a committee appeared before the Little Rock School Board at a meeting Saturday night and asked that the pupils of the high school be allowed to give dances as a part of their entertainments, pastors of two Little Rock churches yesterday deplored dancing in the schools. The Rev. A. O. Evans, pastor of the Asbury Methodist church expressed his disapproval of dancing in the schools and announced that he would express a few further opinions on next Sunday. At Immanuel Baptist church a resolution was adopted urging the School Board not to permit the use of the high school for such entertainments.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 1963

The Arkansas Christian Civic Foundation - with the anti-gambling bill it supported “butchered” in the legislature - made a direct appeal to Arkansas citizens today. The foundation, in a full-page advertisement, asked citizens to call Gov. Faubus, their senators and representatives to “save our state from the ravages of gambling.” The ad did not dictate a course of action, apparently leaving that to the lawmakers.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 1988 WASHINGTON - The Army announced Tuesday that it will dispose of aging chemical weapon supplies at eight military installations, including the Pine Bluff Arsenal, by burning them on site. “No agents or munitions from the stockpile will be transported to other storage installations for destruction,” said James R. Ambrose, undersecretary of the Army. Rep Beryl Anthony Jr., D-Ark., whose district includes the Pine Bluff Arsenal, praised the Army’s decision not to transport the stockpiles.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 24, 2003

Within a month, John Barrow neighborhood children will fill Parkview Arts/Science Magnet High School’s classrooms with music, dance and study even after the school day’s final bell rings. After months of delay and a community wide debate, the Little Rock Parks Department has finalized plans to start a pilot youth program at the school to serve the surrounding John Barrow neighborhood. The school will open its doors three evenings a week during the school year.
