The University of Phoenix Northwest Arkansas Campus is providing a series of career-building events to help job seekers set themselves apart.

Workshop helps

nonprofit staffs

People working for nonprofit organizations can attend a free workshop Thursday through the Center for Nonprofit Communication at Drury University at the university’s new site in Bentonville.

The workshop is designed for executives, staff, volunteers and board members of nonprofit organizations in Northwest Arkansas. Participants will learn how to form clear and concise key messages, develop a message platform, collaborate through community connections and media management.

The workshop is set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at 1404 S.E.

Writer teaches art of mystery

Mystery writers and readers alike have an opportunity to take an eight-week course on how to write a mystery.

The course will feature a step-by-step look at the process of writing a mystery, from the idea to the possibility of publication.

The class will explore issues of good writing, particular to dialogue and mystery fiction. It will teach techniques and strategies for elaborating the back-story, developing interesting characters, creating clues and red herrings, adopting point-ofview and authentic voice and plotting.

E.A. Allen, a NorthWest Arkansas Community College history professor, former CIA intelligence officer and mystery writer, will be teaching the course.

The course will meet from 3:45 to 5:45 p.m. on Thursdays, beginning March 7, at the Bella Vista Center. The cost is $66.

Volunteers sought to serve lunch

The Samaritan Community Center Cafe in Springdale will begin serving lunch on Mondays, starting March 4.

Currently, the cafe is serving a meal to Northwest Arkansas residents in need from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

There is a chef on staff that does most of the work, but volunteers are needed to help prep the meal at 9 a.m.

Cyclists ready

to ride March 3

Cyclists in Northwest Arkansas and surrounding regions will be participating in the eighth annual Highway 71 Classic. The classic is also a fundraiser for the Bicycle Coalition of the Ozarks, a nonprofit promoting a bicycle-friendly community.

There are three options for the bike ride: A 32-mile, mainly flat route.

A 71-mile, hilly route.

A 56-mile, off-road comprised of dirt mainly dirt roads route.

The event starts at 8 a.m.

March 3 at the Greenhouse Grille, 481 S. School in Fayetteville. The entry fee is $20 in advance; $15 for students;

and $25 on the morning of the classic.

Habitat seeking sponsors

There are families in Washington County that are in need of affordable housing.

These families turn to Habitatfor Humanity for assistance.

Habitat for Humanity has land and needy families but is in need of funding to be able to build. In an effort to raise the funds, the organization has started an online campaign for donors to sponsor square feet. An individual has the option of becoming a fundraiser in the campaign and can recruit donors, making it a fun competition.

gifted students

The Think, Research, Explore, Create Center for Gifted Education will host an informational meeting about the Gifted and Talented Program in Bentonville Public Schools at 6 p.m. Monday.

Referrals for testing to determine a need for gifted and talented services will be accepted until Friday.

Hobbs celebrates Aldo Leopold

Aldo Leopold, a man who helped shape conservation, the modern environmental movement and authored the “Sand County Almanac,” will be celebrated at Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area on Saturday.

The day will begin at 10 a.m. with a dutch oven demonstration. There will be a reading from Leopold’s book, an outdoor journaling experience and a showing of “Green Fire: Aldo Leopold and a Land Ethic for Our Time.”

The activities offered throughout the day are free.

Red Cross seeks blood

The American Red Cross is celebrating Black History Month by remembering Dr.

Charles Drew, a black surgeon and blood specialist who become the first medical director of an American Red Cross blood bank in 1941.

NWACC remembers

nuclear testing

On March 1, 1954, the U.S.

military detonated a thermonuclear weapon over Bikini Atoll in what was called the Castle Bravo test.

NorthWest Arkansas Community College is holding an event to commemorate the victims of the test on Thursday. The event will feature remarks from Carmen Chong Gum, the Republic of the Marshall Islands consul general, a candlelight service and a presentation by Columbia University Fellow Jessica A.

Schwartz.

From noon to 1:15 p.m., there will be Marshallesemusic and Schwartz’s presentation. At 1:30 p.m. there will be a documentary viewing, the candlelight service and a reading of the names of the victims of the test.

The event will be in Student Center Room 108 at NorthWest Arkansas Community College in Bentonville.
