LR Parkview uses 2nd-half pressure

— Fort Smith Southside had taller players than host Little Rock Parkview, but rarely held the ball long enough for it to matter.

Derriel Banyard scored a game-high 21 points and grabbed six rebounds in a 69-46 victory Friday night over Southside, which had 29 turnovers.

Parkview (14-5, 10-4 7A/6 A-Central) never trailed. The Patriots led 11-5 at the end of the first quarter, helped by 3 three-pointers.

Forward Drew Jones kept Southside close with points in the middle. Her jump shot made it 18-15 with 3:14 remaining in the first half, but Southside wouldn’t get any closer. Banyard and Christyal Holloway each converted three point plays to pad Parkview’s lead. The Lady Patriots led 28-21 at halftime.

Parkview increased its defensive pressure in the second half and expanded its lead with three more three-pointers.

“We stepped up our pressure defensively ... put more pressure on their guards,” Parkview Coach Lahoma Howard said. “We needed those turnovers.”

Parkview led 44-31 at the end of the third quarter. Southside (19-8, 8-6) had 19 turnovers in the second half, and Jones was limited to just two points after scoring 16 before halftime.

“I didn’t feel like they took it away, we took it away,” Southside Coach Sherry White said of the Rebels’ early emphasis in the lane. “I felt we could have gone there all day.”

Holloway scored 17 points for Parkview. Jones led Southside with 18 points and added three rebounds, while Payton Hamilton added 13 points and six rebounds.
