— Manila quake small, U.S. geologists say

The U.S.

Geological Survey recorded a small earthquake near Manila on Wednesday evening, but officials in the Mississippi County town said Thursday that there were no injuries or damage.

The quake registered 2.6 in magnitude and was centered four miles southeast of Manila. The fault was about 10 miles below the earth’s surface, geologists said.

People reported feeling the earthquake in Blytheville and Osceola, according to the Center of Earthquake and Research Information’s website.

Carla Brewer, a city employee, said she didn’t feel Wednesday’s earthquake, but has felt other earthquakes in the western Mississippi County town in the past.

Manila sits on the southern end of the New Madrid Seismic Zone, a series of faults that cut from southern Illinois into northeast Arkansas. The zone produced some of the largest earthquakes in U.S. history in 1811-12.

“Living here makes you wonder when and if a big earthquake will come,” Brewer said. “It does make you worry.” - ARKANSAS DEMOCRAT-GAZETTEConway police: New leads in I-40 killing

CONWAY - Arkansas State Police agents investigating the shooting death of a Conway man have new leads and are asking the public for help in identifying a car believed to have been in the area where the killing occurred.

Jose Martinez, 31, of Conway, the driver of a black Nissan Frontier pickup, was shot the morning of Feb. 10 as his vehicle approached the Interstate 40 westbound exit onto Dave Ward Drive in Conway, police said. He later died at a Conway hospital.

State police said in a news release Wednesday that special agents now suspect that a white, four-door Nissan passenger car was in the area where Martinez was killed.

“Agents are particularly interested in hearing from anyone who may have seen the white Nissan as early as 4:45 [a.m.] in the vicinity of I-40 at Morgan or along the westbound lanes into Conway [as] late [as] 5:15 a.m.,” the release said.

State police urged anyone with information about the two vehicles to call (501) 618-8100.

TULSA - Prosecutors on Thursday filed first-degree murder charges against two brothers accused of fatally shooting four women at a crime-ridden Tulsa apartment complex in January.

Cedric Poore, 39, and his brother, James Poore, 32, were charged in Tulsa County District Court with four counts of first-degree murder and two additional counts of robbery with a firearm.

Police said the brothers lived in the complex where 23-year-old twins Rebeika Powell and Kayetie Melchor, 33-year-old Misty Nunley and 55-year-old Julie Jackson were killed Jan. 7.

The Poores were arrested earlier this month on suspicion of committing the crimes. Jail records indicate both men are scheduled to be arraigned today in district court.

No information was immediately available in court records on whether either had an attorney.

The brothers have prior felony convictions for robbery, according to court records.

The slayings, which investigators believe happened during the day, have raised concerns about whether residents in the south Tulsa neighborhood have been afraid to call in crime tips.

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. - A Missouri House Democrat’s plan would send colleagues to prison for proposing legislation limiting collective bargaining rights.

Representative Jeff Roorda, of Barnhart introduced the bill Friday in response to a Republican House member’s proposal to jail lawmakers for introducing gun control measures.

Roorda said he was “inspired” by the GOP approach to protecting gun rights and he wants to do the same for unions. Rep. Mike Leara, of St. Louis County, is sponsoring the bill banning gun-control legislation.

Both measures would give lawmakers prison terms of up to four years for proposing gun restrictions or antiunion bills.
