President Barack Obama said in a radio interview with the Rev. Al Sharpton that next week’s dedication of a statue of civil-rights pioneer Rosa Parks will be a “powerful moment,” adding that the Parks statue will be the first full-length one of a black woman in the U.S. Capitol building.

Robert Sand, 50, who was once dubbed by prosecutors as the government’s most-wanted deadbeat parent, pleaded guilty in a Central Islip, N.Y., court to failing to pay child support, owing more than $1.2 million on three children from two failed marriages.

Cardinal Julius Darmaatjadja, 78, of Indonesia, said he will not attend the conclave to elect the next pope because he is too old and infirm to participate, specifically citing poor eyesight and inability to have an assistant inside the Sistine Chapel as reasons for staying home.

Patricia Kunkle has filed suit in an Ohio court against her former employer, defense contractor QMark Inc., contending that she was fired because she voted for President Barack Obama, a claim the company denies.
