Rogers Woman Gets Probation In Stabbing

— A Rogers woman was placed on four years of state-supervised probation for stabbing her son in the hand with a ink pen last year.

Tina Marie Schofield-Starks pleaded guilty Tuesday to domestic battering in the second degree, a Class C felony. Her plea came under an agreement Jay Saxton, chief public defender, reached with Stephanie McLemore, deputy prosecutor.

Schofield-Starks was arrested Aug. 30, 2012.

She went to her 12-year-old son’s school to drop off medication for him. Her son was given detention Aug. 29 for poking people or trying to poke people with a pencil at school, according to the court affidavit.

Schofield-Starks asked to see her son and was taken to his classroom, according to the affidavit. Her son came outside the classroom with his teacher. Schofield-Starks asked to see her son’s hand. She then grabbed his hand and stabbed him in the palm with an ink pen, according to court documents.

According to court documents, the boy told police it felt “terrible” to get stabbed in the hand, and his mother told him if he poked anyone again she would do the same thing again.

According to court documents, Schofield-Starks told police she didn’t realize she stabbed her son that hard until she saw him grab a tissue and put it on his hand. She also told police she intended to stab her son in the hand when she went to the school to take him his medication.

The affidavit states the skin on the boy’s hand was broken and red around the injury.

The incident took place in front of the boy’s teacher and an assistant principal, according to court documents. School officials reported the incident to police.

Circuit Judge Robin Green accepted the plea agreement and Schofield-Starks’ guilty plea.

She was placed on probation for four years under Act 346. That means her conviction can be expunged if she successfully completes probation.

She was sentenced to seven days in the Benton County Jail, but received credit for three days she previously spent in jail. Schofield-Starks also must work 20 days in the Benton County Work Program. She was allowed to have supervised contact with her son.

A review hearing is set for Sept. 16.
