Program set on Civil War chaplain

Volunteer Tom Iverson will offer programs on the life of Civil War-era chaplain the Rev. Francis Springer at 11 a.m.

and 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Smith National Historic Site.

Springer served as post chaplain for Fort Smith during the war and the early Reconstruction era.

Springer’s stories tell the plight of the military and civilian residents of the fort as the countryside around the town was being ravaged by guerrilla warfare. A friend of President Abraham Lincoln, Springer was able to help the fort acquire aid from the federal government during the war.

Springer was stationed at Fort Smith from 1863-1867. More information is available by calling (479) 783-3961.

The Center for Art and Education in Van Buren will host its fourth annual 5x5 Gala starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Fort Smith Convention Center.

Guests can enjoy wine, food and music. Local and regional artists will create their own 5x5 creations on site during the event.

Guests can bid on the works of art completed on-site or participate in an exciting dash for their favorite 5x5 painting.

The Fort Smith Little Theatre, 401 N. Sixth St., will host performances of Steel Magnolias April 4-13. Auditions for the production are set for 7 p.m. Monday and Tuesday.

The play is based on the 1989 movie which starred Sally Field, Dolly Parton, Julia Roberts, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis and Daryl Hannah. The cast will include six women ages 20 to 70 along with nonspeaking roles for four men ages 16 to 70.
