Siloam Springs Holds Off Van Buren

Cameron Makes Big Shots For Lady Panthers

— Siloam Springs got the defensive stops it needed in the fourth quarter, and sophomore Baily Cameron made it count on the other end Tuesday in a 49-44 win against Van Buren.

Cameron scored eight straight points for the Lady Panthers in the fourth and took a charge on the other end as Siloam Springs got four stops in five possessions.

All four of Cameron’s baskets came underneath as the Lady Panthers attacked the basket with Van Buren post player Maria Santillana in foul trouble. That run gave Siloam Springs a 47-39 lead.

“That was a big key with Baily putting those short shots in with the big girl (Santillana) guarding her,” said Siloam Springs coach Brett Sanders. “She was in foul trouble. We wanted to go after her. Baily did a great job of putting those shots in. Those shots are sometimes the toughest to make.”

A basket from Morgan Miller made it 49-40. The Lady Panthers didn’t score again, but they came up with enough defensive stops the rest of the way.

Cameron finished with a team-high 14 points, while Morgan Miller scored 13 for Siloam Springs (12-12, 5-8).

Kaylee Sheppard had another big game for Van Buren (5-17, 1-12), hitting six 3-pointers and scoring 27 points. However, Sheppard did not connect on a 3-pointer in the fourth quarter.

“I told the coaches she ought to be tired by the fourth quarter,” Sanders said. “Thank goodness she did miss them or it would have been a different game.”

Siloam Springs went on a 12-3 run in the first half to lead 27-18, but Van Buren closed to within 27-23 at halftime after a basket by Marla Burgos and a 3-pointer from Jordan Outlaw.

Sheppard gave the Lady Pointers the lead with 5:55 left in the third on 3-pointer by Sheppard, but a free throw from Mayse Pippin knotted the score at 29. Siloam Springs retook the lead on a basket by Bailee Owens and never trailed again.

“We’re just young and we don’t know how to finish yet,” Van Buren coach Merrill Mankin said. “That just comes with experience. You usually don’t do that with young kids. That’s what’s costing us now.”
