Pickup carjacked near Fort Smith

— Sebastian County sheriff’s deputies were trying to identify a woman who took a Fort Smith man’s pickup at gunpoint Saturday night after she flagged him down on the side of a highway.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Philip Pevehouse said Edgar Barnes, 37, was driving a red 2006 Dodge Ram pickup, Oklahoma tag number 487-BOL, south on U.S. 71 in the Rye Hill area south of Fort Smith about 10:30 p.m. when a small, blond woman on the side of the highway flagged him down as if she needed help.

Barnes pulled to the side of the highway and began to speak to the woman through the passenger-side window when she pointed a gun at him and demanded he get out of the pickup, a sheriff’s office news release stated. He got out and crossed the highway into the median as the woman drove south in the pickup.

Barnes found his cell phone and wallet, which had $300 missing, on the side of the highway near where the truck was taken, the news release stated.

The woman was described as having waist-length hair with a “skinny” face and was wearing a black leather jacket and dark jeans, according to the news release.

The sheriff ’s office was following leads but asked anyone with information about the robbery to call the sheriff’s office at (479) 783-1051.
