Homemade Explosives Found in Mailboxes

— Police are searching for the people who placed two homemade explosives inside mailboxes in east Fayetteville.

Fayetteville police Sgt. Craig Stout said Monday evening two separate callers reported finding their mailboxes heavily damaged from what appeared to be homemade bombs.

No one was injured from the detonations, Stout said.

“I can’t say whether or not we’ll involve the postal inspector yet,” Stout said.

A resident called at 4 p.m. Monday to report a damaged mailbox at the 1700 block of Hartford Drive, Stout said.

That caller said she thought she heard the explosion Sunday night, he said. The explosion damaged two mailboxes, he said.

A second caller reported hearing a blast about 5 p.m. Monday at 1400 Eastwood Drive, Stout said.

The homemade devices appear to be similar to others seen on YouTube videos, he said. Stout did not know what type of chemicals were used for the explosion.

Investigators will treat these incidents more serious than the average criminal mischief case, he said.

“It’s more than the standard graffiti or baseball bat damage,” Stout said.

The explosives could have seriously hurt someone, he said.
