Prairie Grove, Farmington Claim Titles In Tournament

— Prairie Grove and Farmington claimed the girls and boys titles respectively in the 4A-1 District Tournament on Saturday.

The Lady Tigers (23-4) claimed a 48-41 win over Farmington, and the Cardinals cruised to a 59-36 win over Pea Ridge. The wins also earned No. 1 seeds at this week’s 4A-North Regional Tournament in Maumelle, which starts on Wednesday.

“I thought our girls played a great second half,” Prairie Grove girls basketball coach Kevin Froud said. “We moved our feet and stayed away from fouls and were able to make our free throws down the stretch.”

Justyne Huber led the Lady Tigers with 18 points and Lacy Beeks added 16.

Prairie Grove led by 12 points early in the second quarter, but a 14-4 run fueled by eight points from Farmington's Haley Maxwell, allowed the Lady Cardinals (20-8) to cut the deficit to 22-18 by halftime.

Farmington opened the fourth quarter on a 12-4 run, highlighted by 3-pointers from Rene Scheyder and Kristi Duchanois. Scheyder's second 3-pointer of the quarter gave Farmington its only lead, 39-38, with 2 minutes, 49 secods left. The Lady Tigers answered with four Huber free-throws and never trailed again.

In the boys final, Farmington’s Alex Dellett scored a game-high 20 points as the Cardinals (21-5) rolled to the title.

“I thought Alex Dellett was the difference in the game," Farmington coach Beau Thompson said. “He picked a good time to have his best game of the year.”

The Cardinals also leaned heavily on Chase Garner, who scored 16 points and Josh Mueller who scored 12 of his 15 points in the fourth quarter, eight of those coming from the free-throw line in the last three minutes of the contest.

Jacob Hall led the Blackhawks (22-6) with 10 points.
