FAYETTEVILLE - Diagrams showing the total state appropriations for universities throughout the United States during 1911 are being distributed here. The diagram shows that Arkansas ranks last among 26 states in appropriations for a state university. According to the diagram, Minnesota in 1911, appropriated $1,479,662, while Arkansas’ appropriation was $145,105.

50 YEARS AGO Feb. 17, 1963

Little Rock University is planning a $1.5 million fundraising effort to erect more buildings for its rapidly increasing enrollment.Dr. Carey V. Stabler, president, said second semester enrollment has reached 1,782, an increase of 20 percent over second semester enrollment last year. Needed in the near future, he said, is another classroom building and a much bigger library. Plans for these are already drawn, he added. No tuition increase is anticipated.

25 YEARS AGO Feb. 17, 1988

Students can stay where they are - if they want. That’s the bottom line for parents in a new student assignment plan for the Little Rock School District recommended Tuesday by Special Master Aubrey V. McCutcheon. Under the plan, pupils will attend the same school in the 1988-89 year that they attended in 1987-88 unless they apply for transfer. For parents, this means if they want their children to remain in the same schools they currently are in, they simply do nothing. There will be no forms to submit and no choices to make.

10 YEARS AGO Feb. 17, 2003

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has temporarily increased security at its Arkansas River operations at Lake Dardanelle and Ozark Lake. When the terrorist alert level was raised nationwide, the Corps’ Little Rock District said certain measures were put in place. Some the public will notice; others they will not, according to a news release from the federal agency. The measures include that no vehicles will be allowed within 80 feet of Corps office buildings, and gates around the locks and dams and hydropower plants will be closed. Also, tours of these facilities are suspended until further notice.
