With only a week remaining in the regular season, Springdale High boys basketball coach Brad Stamps hopes his team can have a strong finish to secure a desirable seeding in the Class 7A State Tournament.

THAT FIGURES

17 — Number of offensive rebounds Springdale’s girls had against Fayetteville

6 — Number of points the Lady Bulldogs managed off those offensive rebounds

“The scenario for us is we feel like we have to go out and win two games next week to be the No. 2 seed,” Stamps said. “That’s the approach we’re taking, and you can't get the second one without getting the first.”

Fayetteville (22-3, 12-0) clinched the 7A/6A-West Conference championship with Friday’s 64-58 win over Springdale, but things should be interesting for Stamps’ team over the final two games of the regular season.

Springdale (16-9, 8-4) trails Bentonville (19-6, 9-3) for the No. 2 seed out of the conference. The Tigers could clinch the spot — and a first-round bye in the Class 7A State Tournament — with a win Tuesday night when the two teams meet in Bulldog Gymnasium.

Springdale ends the regular season Friday at Van Buren, which has shown to be a particularly tough opponent at home.

PLAY OF THE WEEK: It’s tough to single out a top play from Springdale’s 59-57 overtime win at Springdale Har-Ber early last week. The Bulldogs made enough plays down the stretch and in overtime to earn a season sweep of its crosstown rival.

PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Stamps got emotional Friday while talking about forward Alex Scharlau, who continues to be Springdale’s leading scorer. The senior finished with a game-high 29 points Tuesday to carry the Bulldogs to a 59-57 win in overtime at Springdale Har-Ber, then followed it up with a team-high 16 points in Friday’s 64-58 loss at Fayetteville.

Point guard Brittany Jurgens helped put Springdale in position to end its length losing streak, scoring 15 points in a 48-34 loss at Har-Ber and then adding 14 points in a 52-37 loss at Fayetteville.

NOTABLE: Springdale’s boys outrebounded Fayetteville 42-36, but the Bulldogs lost after committing 13 turnovers to Fayetteville’s 5. ... The Lady Bulldogs had difficulty slowing down Fayetteville’s 3-point shooting. The Lady Purple’Dogs opened up the first half by making 5 of 9 3-pointers.

THE LINGO: “We started out in zone and kind of dared them to shoot it because that was kind of one of their weaknesses coming in. But when they started hitting some shots, that just made them tougher to stop.”

— Heather Hunsucker, Springdale girls basketball coach.

UP NEXT: Scharlau, Jurgens and DaShaun Stark will be amongst the seniors who’ll play their final game in Bulldog Gymnasium on Tuesday when Springdale hosts Bentonville on Tuesday. Springdale wraps up the regular season with a game next Friday at Van Buren.
