Richardson, Perry help propel Eagles

— Buoyed by a combined 35-point effort from senior Dave Richardson and sophomore Jerry Perry, Mayflower defeated Perryville 52-34 on Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the 3A-5 Tournament at Episcopal Collegiate in Little Rock.

The victory sends the Eagles (16-5) into tonight’s semifinal game against Jessieville and qualifies them for next week’s regional tournament at Jessieville.

“Perryville was a good enough team to get you if you’re not careful,” Mayflower Coach Brent Stallings said. “They can beat you, so I’m happy to get out of here with a victory.”

Richardson led the Eagles with 18 points, while Perry added 17.

Perryville led 8-6 early, but Mayflower scored the last seven points of the first quarter and the first seven points of the second quarter to take control. Mayflower expanded a 27-17 halftime lead to a 44-31 advantage to start the fourth quarter.

Perry sparked the Eagles’ first-half 14-0 run.

“He needs to work on his shot,” Stallings said of Perry. “If he ever develops a good jump shot where he can put it in the hole, he’ll be real dangerous. But he’s hard to guard. You can’t keep him from getting to the basket. He’s an excellent assist man and he finishes well around the basket.We need to get him to finish well from 15- to 20-feet out.”

Senior guard Nathan Hubard led Perryville, scoring nine points in each half to account for his 18 points.

ARKADELPHIA 58, NASHVILLE 35 Kris Oliver’s 15 points aided the Badgers in their 4A-7 semifinal victory over the Scrappers at Bauxite. Mark Brazil added 14 for Arkadelphia, which broke out to a 29-21 halftime advantage. Brandon Shamrock and Cameron Alexander each scored 12 for Nashville.

BENTON HARMONY GROVE 33, FOUNTAIN LAKE 27 Hayden Burchfield led the Cardinals (15-10) with 10 points in a victory over the Cobras in the 3A-5 quarterfinal game at Episcopal Collegiate. Bryce Sossamon added nine for Harmony Grove, which plays Episcopal in tonight’s semifinals. Sam Crutchfield scored 12 and Andrew Freeman 10 for Fountain Lake (11-11).

CENTRAL ARKANSAS CHRISTIAN 51, MALVERN 45 Travis Byrne scored 16 points in leading the Mustangs (22-5) over the Leopards in the semifinals of the 4A-7 Tournament at Bauxite. Josh Holland added 13 for Malvern, which trailed 27-26 at the half. Quinton Jones scored 12 and Devin Bradford 10 for Malvern.

EARLE 72, RIVERCREST 56 Autry Allen led the Bulldogs with 37 points in a 3A-3 Tournament victory over the Colts. Daquan Trotter added 16 and Jalon Warren 10 for Earle.

ENGLAND 70, CUTTER MORNING STAR 34 Josh Fudge hit 6 of 7 three-pointers and finished with 26 points as the Lions (18-6) knocked off the Eagles in the semifinals of the 2A-5 Tournament at Magnet Cove. Trey Means added 14 and Monte Toney 12 for England, which led 33-18 at the half.

HARDING ACADEMY 60, RIVERVIEW 34 Will Francis scored 21 points as the Wildcats (21-6) cruised to a victory over the Raiders in the championship game of the 3A-2 Tournament at Bald Knob. It was the 14th consecutive victory for Harding Academy. Lock Adair added 19 for Harding Academy, which led 26-12 at the half and 47-24 after three quarters. Desmond Pettis led Riverview (17-9) with 11 points, while Isaac Howard added 10.

POYEN 53, MOUNTAIN PINE 46 Parker Shields paced the Indians (23-2) with 20 points in a 2A-5 Tournament victory over the Red Devils (11-10) at Magnet Cove. Caleb Collins added 14 and Cameron Collins 11 for Poyen, which led 25-19 at the half. Jamal Lafond scored 26 points to lead Mountain Pine.

THURSDAY’S GIRLS BAUXITE 54, CENTRAL ARKANSAS CHRISTIAN 48 Makayla Blanchett hit a three-pointer with 30 seconds remaining, helping the Lady Miners (20-7) turn back the Lady Mustangs in the semfinals of the 4A-7 Tournament at Bauxite. Mary Crow led Bauxite with 19 points, while Blanchett added 16. Sydnie Jones scored 12 to lead CAC (22-6), while Kendall Krueger added 10.

DOVER 38, POTTSVILLE 26 Kaitlin Meador scored 14 points and the Lady Pirates (19-5) outscored the Lady Apaches 14-4 in the fourth quarter to take a 4A-7 Tournament semifinal victory at Booneville.

GLEN ROSE 38, FOUNTAIN LAKE 31 Senior forward Alysa Reed scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds as the Lady Beavers ousted the Lady Cobras from the 3A-5 Tournament at Episcopal Collegiate. Glen Rose trailed by as many as six points in the second quarter before taking a 20-19 halftime lead. The Lady Beavers never trailed in the second half. Rebecca Tuggle added 11 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists for Glen Rose. Rachelle Martin led Fountain Lake with 11 points. Katie Lampo added eight points and eight rebounds, and Taylor Jeffress made a game-high four steals.

MAGNET COVE 50, MOUNT IDA 22 Laney Gibson led the Lady Panthers with 16 points in a victory over the Lady Lions in the semifinals of the 2A-5 Tournament at Magnet Cove. Bethany Sullivan and Kendall Loy added 14 and 13 points, respectively, for the Lady Panthers, who raced out to leads of 10-0 and 15-4 in the first half.

MALVERN 55, ASHDOWN 29 Raven Baker scored 23 points as the Lady Leopards shut down the Lady Panthers in the second half of the 4A-7 semifinal game at Bauxite. Labreshia Scott scored 13 to lead Ashdown, which was held to 11 points in the final two quarters.

NEWPORT 48, SOUTHSIDE BATESVILLE 45 D’Jharion Lee led the host Lady Greyhounds (18-6) with 16 points in a victory over the Lady Southerners in the semifinals of the 4A-2 Tournament. Tyrenia Friar added 12 for Newport. Jennifer Wyatt scored 14 and Morgan Case 10 for Southside.

PERRYVILLE 49, MAYFLOWER 31 Behind a combined 32-point effort from seniors Lakyn Kendrick and Tori Cody, the Lady Mustangs (19-7) rolled by the Lady Eagles in the 3A-5 Tournament at Episcopal Collegiate. Kendrick scored 17 and Cody 15 for Perryville, which jumped out to a 16-5 after the first quarter and led 28-9 at the half. Bailey Camp led Mayflower with eight points. Perryville advances to play E Stem in tonight’s semifinals.

POYEN 50, ENGLAND 46 Hadison Bates scored 14 points to lead Poyen to a 2A-5 Tournament victory at Magnet Cove. Alesha Pennister led England with 14 points. Shanna Shavers added 12 points and 12 rebounds for England, while Lawanda Criss scored 10 points.

RIVERVIEW 46, HARDING ACADEMY 41 Meg Meachum scored 13 points as the Lady Raiders (18-3) defeated the Lady Wildcats in the championship game of the 3A-2 Tournament at Bald Knob. Dymond Smith added 10 points and came up with 12 rebounds for Riverview, which led 28-23 at the half. Riley Rose scored 12 points to lead Harding Academy.
