Pool offers variety of play in variety of locations

For some, pool is an accidental endeavor, something that sounds like a good idea when an open table presents itself at a local watering hole or restaurant. For others, it’s almost a way of life, a weekly competition in the form of tournaments or league play.

Northwest Arkansas pool halls cater to both sorts, and from novices to experts, too.

Fayetteville’s Green Room, for instance, is home to a weekly 9-ball tournament on Monday and a league that meets every Wednesday night. It also features several first-come, first-serve tables open to those who claim them. Patrons there can pay for games in two ways: renting a table by the hour or through a coin-operated, pergame system.

A league system devised in Hot Springs only to later become popular on a national scale is helping business atThe Green Room, reports owner Rustin Fuller.

“Pool is on the rise. League is really starting to generate interest in pool again. It’s what’s saving pool a little bit right now,” he says.

The Green Room’s league is affiliated with the North American Pool Shooters Association and, among theirmany options, they play 8-ball games with teams of three.

But part of pool’s charm is that almost anyone at any skill level can play the more simple billiard games. The only requirement The Green Room applies is an age limit, one necessary because as a bar, no one under the age of 21 is admitted.
