Smoke Odor Evacuates School

— Students evacuated Heritage High School at the beginning of seventh period Wednesday due to a smoke smell in the southwest corner of the building.

There was no fire, said Fire Chief Tom Jenkins. The fire call was logged at 2:55 p.m.

Students started seventh period in class, said Jerrod Blockburger, assistant principal. The smell was likely caused by an overheated electrical cord, he said.

Principal Karen Steen was visiting a classroom on the third floor of the south side of the high school when she smelled smoke, Blockburger said. Steen called Blockburger who smelled what he described as a smoking or burning wire odor. Blockburger said he pulled the alarm and the building was evacuated.

The evacuation went smoothly, Blockburger said. The school’s last fire drill was Monday and although there are between 1,800 and 1,950 students inside the high school at any one time, they averaged 2 minutes and 47 seconds to evacuate the building, he said.

Students finished seventh period after firefighters inspected electrical boxes, two floors of classrooms and the roof in south end of the building.

Parent-teacher conferences were also scheduled in the building on Wednesday.
