River Backwaters To Be Dredged

Commissioners from the Arkansas Game & Fish Commission have approved an agreement with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to restore Arkansas River backwater habitat at Rector Brake and Coal Pile.

The grant money will come from the Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership.

This is a regional collaboration of natural resource and science agencies, conservation organizations and private interests. It was developed to strengthen the management and conservation of aquatic resources in the southeastern United States.

Game & Fish will dredge openings in the two areas to increase the overall depth of the backwater.

Cost of the project is $120,000.
