PUBLIC VIEWPOINT: Escorts Involve Economic Issues, Too

Just when I’ve erased the funeral procession controversy from my mind, along comes another article about the issue that stirs me.

A few days ago there was an article about private companies providing escort service to other cities in Arkansas. Evidently some of these private companies will provide motorcycle escorts with purple fl ashing lights. In response to an inquiry about the practice, Springdale’s chief of police was quoted as saying she fully expected to see a private company providing that service to Springdale in the future. In Ms. Kelly’s previous statements about this issue, she stated safety was a primary concern. So, now we are going to let a couple of guys who just happen to ride motorcycles provide escort service on a part-time basis.

I would have thought the police would command more respect from local motorist and provide a greater degree of safety.

On Sunday (Feb. 3), an article quotes the chief of police for Fayetteville as saying: “It’s just not created a problem for us. I don’t remember ever getting a complaint. I think the small amount of risk it is, is worth the service to the community.” Evidently it costs Fayetteville about$13,000 per year.

Perhaps I should consult with a Fayetteville funeral service about my own funeral. It’s about as easy for someone in Fayetteville to make the trip to Stuckey Cemetery as it is for someone in Springdale.

Now the issue involves not only pride and dignity, but also economic consequences.
